Low-cost Solution for Adding Audio Capabilities to 8- or 16-bit Systems
The short presentation and subsequent lab portion of this session explain why the ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) method is a cost-effective way to provide audio feedback and guidance in a product. ADPCM eliminates the need for a D/A converter (DAC) because analog signals can be produced from a PWM signal that is low-pass filtered and fed to an audio amplifier. Audio is compressed to a smaller footprint so less flash storage is needed per unit of playback time. The presentation provides details of ADPCM, and then the lab portion of the session uses an SPB evaluation board to show how the modulation method can generate an audio output in a typical embedded system. Additionally, the lab work shows how low-cost tools can be used to program external flash memory in the SPB (and other targets), eliminating the need for special programming equipment. |
