A Big Decision: Does the Embedded System Need an RTOS?
A common dilemma faced by designers of embedded systems is whether or not to use a real-time operating system (RTOS). This presentation briefly explores a few common embedded system architectures, then describes how the use of an RTOS is beneficial in typical systems. Basic RTOS concepts are explained, as are the debugging requirements for an RTOS based system. A comparison of several RTOS products highlights relative strengths. Additionally, the issues of cost effectiveness, partner support, and HEW debugging support are covered. |
