Introduction to System Management and IPMI for ATCA and MicroTCA Applications

This session presents an overview of AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA (xTCA) hardware platform management and the related PICMG specifications that support high-availability server applications. The presentation explains that hardware platform management encompasses a number of processes: monitoring and controlling boards, modules and field replaceable units; checking the basic health of the platform; reporting anomalies; and, if possible, taking corrective action. It also covers other functions that might be performed, including archiving event reports and failure notifications, and managing power, cooling and interconnect notifications. The PICMG specifications are discussed in detail, using examples that show how the H8S MCU hardware platform management layer operates. The session concludes with a discussion of key management-oriented features required of microcontrollers selected for the task of maximizing server availability.
